Training FAQs

1. How is Krav Maga different from combat sports (MMA, kickboxing, Muay Thai, Sanda, etc.) or martial arts (Kung Fu, Wushu, Karate, Taekwando, Judo, etc.)?

Krav Maga is not a competitive or combat sport, nor it is a martial art, nor is it for performance. The goal of Krav Maga is practical and realistic personal protection, not lasting several rounds in a ring to win a fight. It is about preparing yourself so that you can prevent or survive an attack, not win a belt or trophy. As such, Krav Maga training focuses on realistic scenarios and attacks, developing the self-defense mindset, and developing the skills you need to survive an attack.

2. How long will it take for me to become proficient at Krav Maga?

Krav Maga, unlike martial arts, is a very fast-progressing system. Part of its design was driven by the need to train people very quickly and very efficiently. Consequently, it typically takes a person of average physical ability perhaps only several months before significant progress is achieved and noticeable. The fundamental idea in Krav Maga is that you can learn something usable in weeks or months, not years.

However, it is important to note that progress is largely based on consistency in training. A person of average physical ability who trains at least four hours a week every week can learn to defend against common attacks within a few months.

3. How safe is Krav Maga? Do I risk getting hurt?

Krav Maga is as safe as any other martial arts form. If you follow the instructor’s directions and mind the safety rules, the chances of being injured during a class are as remote and even less than for any other sport.

4. What do I need to bring to class? What should I wear?

Footwear: Wear sneakers or training shoes (we have a no-barefoot policy). Indoor training shoes are preferred, since we try to keep our mats clean.

Clothing: Comfortable exercise clothes are fine, but it would be best to wear t-shirts, not tank tops or sleeveless shirts to protect yourself. For women, avoid low-cut tops. Also, avoid very short shorts. Some of the techniques require aggressive movement on the floor or grabbing and pulling, so you may either end up with mat burns on your shoulders or legs (very painful!) or you might have a wardrobe malfunction if you’re not in proper attire.

For men, bring a groin guard. If you don’t have one or don’t know what brand to get, ask our instructors about it.

Also, you will need water, a towel, and a change of clothes.

5. What are the classes like? How are they structured?

Classes in Krav Maga Beijing are rolling throughout the year. Occasionally, we will have crash courses for beginners, but for the most part, we encourage new students to jump into the regular classes.

Each class is structured so that we start the hour with basic movements that are built up and combined into a full technique or series of techniques. Also, while we strive to make each session unique, we will always go back to techniques, because repetition is necessary to learning.

6. Are the classes good for people who want to lose weight and get fit?

While we do focus on conditioning, our classes are not necessarily fitness-oriented. Although the sessions can be quite a workout, as many students will tell you, the main goal is to train in self-defense and condition your body and mind to survive attacks the Krav Maga way.

7. I've never done any kind of martial arts or combat sports before. How do I start?

You don’t need to have previous experience in martial arts or combat sports to learn Krav Maga. All you need is the willingness to work hard, and the open-mindedness to learn the techniques and develop the self-defense attitude. It won’t be easy, especially at first, but it is a rewarding and fulfilling experience if you stay with it.

8. But I'm a small person with little strength. What good is Krav Maga to me?

Krav Maga was designed to benefit the average person. The system is not about sheer strength or power. In fact, one of the basic tenets of Krav Maga is that one should not oppose power with power. Rather, Krav Maga blends a combination of physical skill with mental self-defense determination. Consequently, Krav Maga is more accessible to people of any sex, shape or size than many other martial art forms.

9. I've done Kung fu / Wushu / Sanda / Karate / Taekwando / MMA / Jiu-jitsu / Muay Thai / kickboxing. How do I start?

While previous martial arts/combat sport experience is always a plus, it also means you may need to adjust. Unlike other combat forms, Krav Maga is not a competitive/combat sport or martial art, nor is it for performance. The goal of Krav Maga is practical and realistic personal protection and surviving an attack.

10. What type of students do get in your classes?

Our students are a mix of young professionals, managers, executives, and university students, etc. Because of the nature of Krav Maga, we prioritize the safety of students in training as well as preserving the learning/training environment.

11. Can my 12-year old son/daughter join the regular Krav Maga classes?

Unfortunately, no. Krav Maga for kids is completely different from the adults class.

For teens ages 15 to 18, they must undergo screening from our instructors before we can accept them in the adults class. Once again, this is dependent on attitude, maturity and self-discipline.

We currently have Kids and Teens Classes for ages 5 to 14, contact us if you would like to book a trial for your child.
